What was done
At ENDO 2026 (13 June) a study presented physical-activity data from adults with obesity losing weight on GLP-1 receptor agonists. At the AAOS 2026 annual meeting (2 March) a retrospective cohort study used a national claims database to examine GLP-1 use around ten common orthopaedic procedures from 2010 to 2023. A paper in the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy analysed persistence and adherence among people starting high-potency, weight-loss-indicated GLP-1 drugs from 2021 to the first half of 2024. [1][2][3]
What was found
Physical activity fell significantly among people losing weight on the drugs, which the authors flag because the drugs reduce lean mass as well as fat. The claims analysis associated long-term use with higher rates of osteoporosis, gout and osteomalacia alongside some short-term post-operative benefits. One-year persistence rose from 33.2 % in 2021 to 60.9 % in 2024, still below the levels seen in randomised trials. [1][2][3]
Limits
Two of the three are conference presentations, not peer-reviewed papers. The claims analysis is observational and cannot establish cause. The persistence cohort was younger, healthier and three-quarters female. [2][3]
